The Unitarian Universalist Church of Chattanooga seeks a dynamic and committed Director of Religious Education for a 30 hour per week position. Our program currently includes approximately 60 children and teens with an average weekly attendance of 25 children in three classes plus a nursery. The person we seek will nurture a loving supporting environment for our children and teens and will provide enthusiastic leadership for our religious education program with the support of an active and engaged religious education committee.

 

Candidates of all religious backgrounds (including nones) are welcome to apply but must be willing to lead a religious education program that supports Unitarian Universalist principles. Programmatic responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing church-based programming for children and youth including Sunday morning Religious Education classes, OWL classes, and nursery care.
  • Overseeing community-based programming for children and youth such as social justice projects (in collaboration with church-wide social justice committee) and trips to The Mountain UU Retreat Center
  • Collaborating with worship team and religious education committee on multi-generational worship services including three annual child and teen led services and other multi-generational services as appropriate.
  • Overseeing other Religious Education sponsored events supported by the Religious Education Committee such as a Solstice Indoor Walking Labyrinth.

Administrative responsibilities include:

  • Managing religious education budget, expenses, enrollment, attendance, and other program files
  • Conducting background checks on all religious education volunteers
  • Meeting regularly with the minister, board, and religious education committee
  • Publicizing RE events through church communications (e.g., the nUUsletter, emails) and external communications, as appropriate
  • Posting and maintaining regular office hours with flexibility built in for unexpected events

 

Education and Experience

We are seeking someone who has or is willing to pursue religious education credentialing through LREDA or an equivalent certification/degree. Experience helpful but not required.
